Common questions about Sports Injury appointments

Should I see a doctor first?

Often Physiotherapy is the best choice for an immediate injury as your Therapist is highly trained in accurate assessment, diagnosis and treatment of muscle, ligament, joint, nerve or bone damage. If your injury is more serious they will be able to refer you on to the appropriate medical provider.

How long before I can compete again?

Your Therapist will discuss your injury with you in detail, including expected time frames and optimal management in order to get you back on the field or track as early as possible. Following set instructions and completing your rehab program will be paramount to fast-tracking your recovery.

What should I expect from treatment?

Assessment
Firstly, an extremely thorough assessment will be undertaken. Your Physiotherapist will ask you some questions about your injury and establish the mechanism of injury to help ascertain the structures involved. This is followed by a thorough physical examination of the region of your pain, function, movements, joints, muscles, ligaments, bones and nerves.

Diagnosis & Education
An accurate diagnosis and the causes of your pain or injury will be explained clearly and simply. No medical jargon! It is very important that you understand your injury in order to be able to recover quickly and maximise your healing. Your therapist will discuss likely timeframes, outcomes and prognosis for your injury.

Treatment & Rehabilitation
Your Physiotherapist will discuss the most effective management for your pain or injury and provide you with an estimate of the number of treatments required for your problem and expected responses to treatment. They will answer ALL of your questions!

Your therapist will then commence treatment which may involve a wide range of manual therapy techniques, combined with other treatment mediums such as massage, mobilisations, acupuncture (dry needling), taping and an exercise rehabilitation program to address your pain, injury or dysfunction. This ensures we are effective in alleviating your pain, healing your injury and any underlying soft tissue, joint or nerve dysfunction and fast-tracking your recovery.

What should I bring to my Appointment?

Please wear loose, suitable clothing to enable access to injured regions during your assessment and treatment. Please bring any previous scans and reports, instructions from surgeons or other therapists, or any other information you have been given relevant to your injury or situation. If you are eligible for insurance benefits please bring your league registration information, private health card if covered) and your bank details. But most importantly bring all your questions so we can answer them!
